Sliding vs Hook-on PVC Strip Curtains: Which to Choose

Oct 05, 2026 / By Chronovex Team / in PVC Strip Curtain & PVC Roll

Quick answer: For most doors, the standard hook-on PVC strip curtain is enough. It comes with the complete set at no extra cost, and people, trolleys and forklifts pass through the strips. Pay for an aluminium sliding track only when the whole curtain must regularly be moved out of the way — for wide loads, machinery or full-width cleaning. At Chronovex, sliding hardware costs ₹6,400 (3 ft door) to ₹8,900 (7 ft door) per door, on top of the per-sq-ft set price.

This guide explains how the two systems differ, what each one costs for a typical door, and a simple way to decide.

Hook-on vs sliding: how each system works

Hook-on (fixed) curtain. A steel hanger rail is fixed above the door, and each PVC strip hangs from it with hook-on clamps. The curtain stays in place: traffic pushes through the overlapping strips and they fall back to close the gap. This is the hardware included in every Chronovex PVC strip curtain complete set.

Sliding curtain. An aluminium track is fixed above the door and the strips hang from trolleys that run along it. The curtain still works like a normal strip curtain, but when needed the whole set can be slid to one side, leaving the opening completely clear. With a sliding track the strips hang from the trolleys, so hook-ons are not used on that door.

When a hook-on curtain is the right choice

  • People and normal trolleys use the door. Strips part easily and close again on their own.
  • The curtain should stay closed all the time — for example to hold AC cooling, keep dust out or reduce insects.
  • Budget matters. The hook-on hardware is already in the per-sq-ft price, so there is nothing extra to buy.
  • Forklifts pass through at normal height. A thicker strip (3 mm) or ribbed strips usually solve wear problems better than a sliding track.

For cold rooms and food areas the hanger can be stainless steel. The SS304 hook-on set resists corrosion, while the CRC zinc-plated set is the economy option for general industrial doors.

When it is worth paying for a sliding track

  • Wide or tall loads — machinery, racks, long pipes or pallets stacked high — that would drag or tear the strips.
  • Loading and unloading in bulk, where the door is fully open for long periods and strips would only get in the way.
  • Full-width cleaning or washing of the door area, common in food processing.
  • Seasonal use — keeping the curtain closed in summer or winter and sliding it aside the rest of the year, without taking strips down.

If none of these apply, the sliding track adds cost without much benefit. If they apply only once in a while, removing a few strips from a hook-on curtain may be enough.

Sliding hardware price per door

The aluminium sliding hardware is priced per door by width and is added to the per-sq-ft price of the curtain:

Door width3 ft4 ft5 ft6 ft7 ft
Sliding hardware (per door)₹6,400₹7,200₹7,800₹8,400₹8,900
  • A width in between takes the next size's rate — a 5.5 ft door is charged at the 6 ft rate.
  • Doors wider than 7 ft use two tracks: 8 ft = 2 × 4 ft, 9 ft = 5 ft + 4 ft.

Worked example: one 4 ft × 7 ft door

Plain transparent 2 mm complete set at ₹189/sq ft. The billed area is the door plus 6 inches in width and height: (48 + 6) × (84 + 6) ÷ 144 = 33.75, billed as 34 sq ft.

Complete set, 34 sq ft × ₹189₹6,426₹6,426
Sliding hardware (4 ft)—₹7,200
Total₹6,426₹13,626

For an 8 ft wide door the sliding hardware is two 4 ft tracks, ₹14,400. Use the strip curtain calculator or the price calculator on the product page for your exact door; the sliding option can be added there.

A quick way to decide

  1. Does anything wider or taller than a person-with-trolley pass through regularly? If no, choose hook-on.
  2. Must the opening be completely clear for long periods? If yes, choose sliding.
  3. Is the problem strip wear rather than clearance? Choose hook-on with 3 mm or ribbed strips instead of a sliding track.
  4. Is it a cold room or wet area? Hook-on with an SS304 rail, or sliding if the door also needs full clearance.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a sliding track to fix torn strips. Tearing usually comes from strips that are too thin for the traffic. Moving to 3 mm or ribbed strips costs much less than a track.
  • Measuring the door, not the space beside it. A sliding curtain parks to one side; if a wall, rack or pillar is in the way, the opening will not clear fully.
  • Ordering one track for a very wide door. Above 7 ft the curtain is split into two tracks, so plan for the strips to park on both sides or one side, as the site allows.
  • Forgetting the per-door cost on multi-door projects. Sliding hardware is charged per door. For ten doors, decide door by door which ones really need it — often only the loading-bay doors do.
  • Comparing quotes on different bases. Check that every quote includes the same items: strips, hanger hardware, cutting to size and GST. Our PVC strip curtain price per sq ft guide lists what a complete set includes.

Installation notes

  • Both systems are fixed above the door on the wall or lintel; leave enough flat surface for the rail or track.
  • A sliding curtain needs clear wall space beside the door where the strips can park when slid aside.
  • Strips should just sweep the floor. Our step-by-step installation guide covers measuring and fixing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a sliding track to an existing hook-on curtain later?

The strips can usually be reused, but the hanger is different: with a sliding track the strips hang from trolleys instead of the fixed rail. Send your door size and current strip width on WhatsApp and we will confirm what is needed.

Is the sliding hardware price per door or per sq ft?

Per door, by door width (3 ft to 7 ft). The curtain itself is still priced per sq ft.

Does a sliding track change how well the curtain seals?

When closed, it works like any strip curtain: the overlap between strips does the sealing. The difference is only that the whole curtain can be moved aside.

Which is better for a cold room?

For normal traffic, a hook-on polar-grade curtain on an SS304 rail. Add a sliding track only if the cold-room door also has to be fully open for loading.
