Air Curtain Door Sensor: Installation & Wiring Guide (2026)

Oct 24, 2026 / By Aditya Kumar / in Air Curtain

An air curtain that runs all day wastes electricity when the door is shut. A door sensor switches the air curtain on only when someone walks in or the door opens, and switches it off a few seconds later. This guide explains the two sensor types, how installation and wiring work, and how to pick the right one for your door.

Air curtain sensor kya hota hai?

It is a small control unit placed between the power supply and the air curtain. When it detects a person or an open door, it closes a relay and the air curtain starts. When there is no movement for a set time, it cuts the power again.

Two types of air curtain sensor

TypeHow it triggersBest for
Motion (IR) sensorDetects people walking towards the doorShops, clinics, showrooms, offices with open or glass doors
Door limit switchA switch on the door frame turns the unit on when the door opensCold rooms, back doors, godowns and doors that stay closed most of the time

The Chronovex motion sensor for single-door air curtains detects up to about 3 m in a 90° cone and switches the unit off 30 seconds after the last movement. It works on 220 V single-door air curtains and fits in-line as a plug-in module.

How much electricity does a sensor save?

The saving depends on how often the door is used. If a shop door sees a customer every few minutes, the air curtain may still run most of the day. If the door opens only a few times an hour, the air curtain stays off most of the time. For the Chronovex single-door sensor we quote a saving of roughly 35–40% versus running the air curtain continuously. Use our energy savings calculator to see what an open door costs you in AC power.

Installation and wiring - step by step

Safety first: switch off the MCB before any work, and get the final connection done by a qualified electrician.

  1. Mount the sensor above or beside the door so it faces the walking path, not the street or a fan.
  2. Wire it in-line: the supply phase (live) goes into the sensor and comes out to the air curtain. Neutral and earth go straight to the air curtain as before. The sensor only switches the live line.
  3. For a limit switch: fix the switch on the door frame so the door presses it when closed. Opening the door releases the switch and starts the air curtain.
  4. Set the delay (if adjustable) so the air curtain keeps running a few seconds after the person passes.
  5. Test: switch on the MCB, walk in and out, and check that the air curtain starts and stops reliably. Check that nobody standing outside triggers it.

A wiring diagram is included with every Chronovex sensor, and it is shown on the product page. If you are unsure, send a photo of your air curtain and switchboard on WhatsApp and our team will guide you.

Common problems and fixes

  • Air curtain turns on by itself: the sensor is facing the road, a fan or direct sunlight. Re-aim it towards the inside walking path.
  • Does not start for slow walkers: the sensor is mounted too high or too far. Bring it closer to the door.
  • Starts late: move the sensor so it sees people a step earlier, or use a limit switch on the door.
  • Lens is hazy or cracked: clean it with a dry cloth; replace the sensor if the lens is damaged.

Which sensor should you choose?

Choose a motion sensor for shop and office doors where people walk in freely. Choose a door limit switch for doors that stay closed, such as cold rooms and godowns. Buying a new air curtain? Use the door size price finder to get the right model, and ask us to add a sensor to the quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a sensor to an old air curtain?
Yes. The sensor connects in-line on the power supply, so it works with most single-door 220 V air curtains. Send a photo of your unit on WhatsApp to confirm.

Will the air curtain switch off when the door is open?
A motion sensor switches off after the set delay if nobody moves. For doors kept open for long periods, a door limit switch is the better choice.

Do I need an electrician?
Yes, for the final connection. The work is simple, but it is on mains power.
