Welding Curtains for Fabrication Shops: PVC Screen Guide

Oct 12, 2026 / By Aditya Kumar / in PVC Strip Curtain & PVC Roll

Quick answer: A welding curtain is a tinted PVC screen hung around a welding bay. It separates the welding area from the rest of the shop, reduces the glare and arc light that reach nearby workers, and holds back spatter, while people can still see through it. At Chronovex, a welding-grade PVC strip curtain set costs ₹239 per sq ft including hanger hardware and GST. A welding-grade PVC roll starts at ₹5,339.

A welding curtain protects people who are near the work, not the welder. The welder still needs the correct helmet, filter lens, gloves and protective clothing.

Why fabrication shops screen their welding bays

  • Arc light and glare. Workers walking past an open bay can be exposed to bright arc light. A tinted screen cuts down what reaches them.
  • Spatter and sparks. A screen helps keep hot spatter inside the bay.
  • Visibility. Unlike a solid wall, a translucent curtain lets supervisors see that someone is inside and working.
  • Flexible layout. Curtains can be moved or extended when the shop layout changes, without building partitions.

Strip curtain or full sheet: two ways to screen a bay

Many shops combine both: sheet screens on the three fixed sides of the booth and a strip curtain at the entrance.

Choosing the tint

Welding curtains are tinted dark so that they block much more light than clear PVC. Chronovex welding curtains are dark amber/green. A darker tint gives more protection from glare but less visibility into the bay. For most fabrication and maintenance shops, the standard tint is a good balance. If you need a specific colour to match an existing booth, mention it when you ask for a quote.

How to size a welding booth curtain

  1. Measure each open side of the bay: width along the floor and height from the floor to the rail position.
  2. Keep a gap at the floor only if needed for ventilation. Otherwise let the curtain reach the floor so that spatter cannot pass under it.
  3. Allow for the entrance. Use strips at the side where people enter, so they can walk through without opening a frame.
  4. Do not close the bay completely. Welding fumes need extraction or ventilation. A curtain should not trap fumes around the welder.

For example, a booth with one 6 ft entrance and a height of 7 ft at the rail is 6 × 7 = 42 sq ft of curtain. At ₹239 per sq ft that is about ₹10,038 for the entrance strip curtain, including the rail and hardware. Send your booth sizes on WhatsApp for an exact quote, since the billed area includes overlap and fixing allowance.

Installation tips

  • Fix the hanger rail to a rigid frame or the shop structure, not to temporary supports.
  • Keep the curtain away from direct contact with the weld and from hot workpieces. It is a screen, not a welding blanket.
  • Check that the curtain does not block emergency exits, fire extinguishers or the view of warning signs.
  • Make sure the fume extraction still works with the curtain in place.

Care and replacement

  • Wipe the curtain with mild soap and water; avoid solvents, which can damage PVC. Our PVC curtain cleaning guide covers the basics.
  • Replace strips that are burnt through, torn or heavily marked by spatter. Individual strips can be replaced without changing the whole curtain.
  • Keep a few spare strips in stock if the bay is in continuous use.

Common mistakes

  • Using clear PVC for a welding bay. Clear strips do not cut glare the way tinted welding PVC does.
  • Treating the curtain as personal protection. It protects bystanders; welders still need their own PPE.
  • Closing the booth without ventilation. Fumes must be extracted.
  • Hanging the curtain too close to the work. Direct spatter and heat damage PVC quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a welding curtain as a door between the shop and the office?

It can screen the opening, but for a clean office door a clear strip curtain or a door is usually better. Use welding curtains around the welding area itself.

Is the welding curtain fire-proof?

No PVC curtain is fire-proof. Welding-grade PVC is made to resist sparks better than ordinary PVC, but it must still be kept away from direct flame and hot metal.

Can you supply curtains for several bays?

Yes. Send the number of bays and the size of each open side, and we will quote the strip sets and rolls together with a GST invoice.
