Step-by-step guide to sizing a commercial or industrial air curtain in India — measure doorway width, mounting height, air velocity, throw distance, and noise tolerance.
Measure the clear opening width and the mounting height. The clear width is what the air curtain must cover edge-to-edge. The mounting height is from finished floor to the bottom of the air curtain unit, not from floor to ceiling.
| Door width | Recommended unit length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 900 mm | 900 mm | Single unit |
| 900–1200 mm | 1200 mm | Single unit |
| 1200–1500 mm | 1500 mm | Single unit |
| 1500–1800 mm | 1800 mm | Single unit |
| 1800–2400 mm | 2 × 1200 mm | Side-by-side, no gap |
| 2400–3600 mm | 2 × 1500 mm or 2 × 1800 mm | Industrial unit recommended |
| Above 3600 mm | Industrial-duty, multiple | Engineering review needed |
An effective air seal needs 2.5 m/s (commercial) to 4 m/s (industrial) at floor level. Discharge velocity at the unit is typically 3–4× the floor velocity because of natural decay and entrainment. Always ask the OEM for a velocity-vs-height chart and not just discharge velocity in the brochure.
| Environment | Acceptable dB(A) at 3 m | Recommended unit |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel lobby, hospital, premium retail | ≤ 62 | Premium with EC fan |
| Restaurant, mall, office | 62–68 | Standard or premium |
| Factory, warehouse, loading bay | 68–78 | Industrial duty |

The air curtain length should match or slightly exceed the door width. For a 4-foot (1219 mm) door use a 1200 mm unit; for a 6-foot door use either a 1800 mm unit or two 900 mm units side-by-side. Never undersize — gaps at the edges defeat the air seal.
Commercial air curtains work best at 2.2–3.0 m mounting height. Above 3.5 m you need an industrial-duty unit with higher discharge velocity (≥12 m/s) to maintain an effective seal at floor level.
For an effective barrier, the air velocity at the floor should be at least 2.5 m/s for commercial doorways and 4 m/s for industrial cold-storage and factory openings. The discharge velocity at the unit is typically 3–4× the floor velocity.
Restaurants, hotel lobbies, and hospital entrances typically need ≤62 dB(A) at 3 m. Factories and loading bays tolerate 70–78 dB(A). Choose a unit with EC fan technology if you need both high velocity and low noise.
In most Indian cities heated air curtains are unnecessary. Heated units make sense in cold-chain receiving docks, hill-station hotels (Manali, Shimla, Darjeeling), and frozen-storage anterooms where indoor temperature drops below 12 °C.
