Air Curtains in Winter: Keep Heat In, Dust & Smog Out

Nov 03, 2026 / By Aditya Kumar / in Air Curtain

Most people think of air curtains as a summer product for keeping flies out and AC cooling in. In winter they do the same job the other way round: they help keep your heated air inside and stop cold draughts, dust and smog from rushing in every time the door opens. For shops, clinics, offices and restaurants in Delhi NCR and North India, that matters from November to February.

What happens at an open door in winter

Warm room air is lighter and escapes through the top of the doorway, while cold outside air flows in at floor level. Each time the door opens, your room heater or heat pump has to work harder to bring the temperature back. During the smog season, outside air also carries fine dust into the shop floor, the reception or the kitchen.

An air curtain mounted above the door blows a steady, high-velocity sheet of air down across the opening. That air barrier reduces the exchange of inside and outside air while people walk through freely. It does not replace a door or an air purifier, but it cuts the draught and dust that come in with every entry.

Where a winter air curtain helps most

  • Retail shops and showrooms that keep the door open for walk-in customers.
  • Clinics, hospitals and diagnostic centres where patients wait near the entrance.
  • Restaurants and cafés with a busy front door and a heated dining area.
  • Offices and reception areas on the ground floor.
  • Warehouses and loading docks where staff work near open shutters.

Year-round needs: cold storage, food and pharma

Some sites need door protection in every season. Cold rooms lose cooling and gain moisture through open doors all year. Food units must keep insects and dust out to meet hygiene rules, and pharma areas need controlled, clean entrances. For these, the usual solution is an air curtain combined with a PVC strip curtain or a magnetic self-closing curtain.

We put the most common combinations together as ready kits: the FSSAI Door Kit for restaurants and food units and the Schedule M Airlock Pack for pharma. For cold rooms, see PVC strip curtains for cold storage and air curtains for cold storage.

How to choose the right size

The air curtain should be as wide as the door opening or slightly wider, and mounted as close to the top of the door as possible. Use our size and price finder: enter your door width and height and it shows the right model and the exact price, which you can send to us on WhatsApp in one tap. Simple winter tips

  • Keep the air curtain on whenever the door is open; use a door sensor so it runs only when needed.
  • Point the airflow straight down or slightly outward to block cold air at floor level.
  • Clean the intake grille every few weeks in the smog season so airflow stays strong.
  • For cold rooms, check that strips overlap properly and replace cracked strips before peak season.

Frequently asked questions

Is an air curtain useful in winter or only in summer?

It is useful in both. In summer it keeps cooled air in and insects out; in winter it reduces heat loss, cold draughts and dust entering through an open door.

Does an air curtain heat the room?

A standard (ambient) air curtain does not heat the air. It works together with your existing room heating by forming an air barrier at the door, so less heat escapes.

Can an air curtain help with smog and dust?

It reduces the amount of outside air, dust and insects that come in through an open doorway. It is not an air purifier, so for indoor air quality you still need proper filtration.
