Magnetic PVC Curtain Calculator — Self-Closing Doorway BOM Tool
Magnetic strip curtains use two PVC halves joined by a vertical magnetic seal that closes automatically after every pass. Enter your door dimensions and get an instant bill of materials for cold rooms, walk-in freezers, clean rooms, and high-traffic warehouse openings.

How This Calculator Works
A magnetic curtain is two PVC sheets meeting at the door center, each with a soft magnetic strip down the inner edge. When personnel or a forklift pass, the curtain parts and snaps closed behind them. We add a 100 mm horizontal overlap so the magnets engage reliably even after thousands of cycles.
half_area_sqft = half_w_in × (height_in + 4) / 144
total_area = half_area × 2
mag_seal_m = height_in × 0.0254
magnet_pairs = ceil(height_in / 8)
top_screws = ceil(width_in / 8) + 1
When to Choose Magnetic Over Standard Strip
- Cold rooms and freezers: Magnetic seals close 100 percent vs 95 percent for strip curtains, saving 20 to 30 percent more energy
- Clean rooms and pharma: Positive seal prevents particulate ingress between cycles
- Pedestrian-only doors: Easier and quieter to pass through than 12-strip curtains
- Doors under 1500 mm width: Magnetic is cost-effective; above this, standard strip is usually preferred
Key Facts About Magnetic PVC Curtains
- Magnetic curtain pairs are spaced every 200 mm of vertical seal length, giving consistent closing force across the full door height.
- Chronovex magnetic curtains use flexible rubber-bonded ferrite strip magnets rather than rigid neodymium, allowing the seal to flex with PVC movement without delaminating.
- For doors below 1500 mm width a magnetic curtain typically reduces energy loss 20 to 30 percent more than an equivalent strip curtain because the central seal closes 100 percent on every cycle.
- The overlap at the center is engineered at 100 mm to keep the magnets in contact through normal forklift wash and personnel traffic without manual re-alignment.
- Each half of a magnetic curtain weighs approximately 1.8 to 2.4 kilograms per square meter, so a typical 4 by 7 foot freezer door has two halves of 3.5 kg each, supporting standard surface-mount hardware.
- For walk-in freezer applications below minus 18 degree Celsius, low-temperature polar grade PVC must be specified to prevent the curtain from becoming brittle.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I choose magnetic instead of standard strip curtain?
Magnetic is the right choice for cold rooms, walk-in freezers, clean rooms, pharmaceutical zones, and any door where you need a positive seal that closes completely after every pass. Standard strip curtains are better for doors wider than 1500 mm, doors with high forklift traffic where strips can be replaced individually, and general factory environments where 95 percent closure is sufficient.
How long do the magnets last?
Chronovex magnetic curtains use rubber-bonded ferrite strip magnets that retain over 95 percent of their magnetic flux for 10 to 15 years under normal operating conditions. They are not affected by temperature swings in cold rooms and do not rust or corrode like neodymium-based products.
Will the magnets interfere with electronics or pacemakers?
No. The magnetic field is short-range and limited to within 50 mm of the seal line. There is no health risk to pedestrians and no interference with warehouse RFID, scanners, or electronic equipment kept at normal distances from the doorway.
Can magnetic curtains handle forklift traffic?
Yes, for occasional or pedestrian-and-forklift mixed traffic. For continuous forklift traffic (more than 100 passes per hour), we recommend standard strip curtains since individual damaged strips are easier to replace than re-magnetizing a torn seal.
What is the lead time?
Standard sizes ship in 7 to 10 working days. Custom magnetic curtains over 84 inch in height require 12 to 18 working days as the magnets are bonded to the PVC in-house at our Noida factory.
