How This Calculator Works

An air curtain must throw a continuous, uniform jet of air from the top of the doorway down to the floor with enough velocity left at floor level to resist the cross-draft. The required discharge velocity rises with mounting height, and the unit length must cover the full door width.

Target floor velocity by application:

  • Comfort: 2.0 m/s — air-conditioning retention at entrances.
  • Industrial: 2.5 m/s — dust, fume and temperature separation.
  • Cold storage: 3.5 m/s — strong barrier against heavy cold-air spill.
  • Fly control: 3.0 m/s — turbulent jet that insects cannot cross.

Standard commercial air curtains are made in 0.9 m, 1.2 m, 1.5 m and 2.0 m lengths; wider doors use multiple units mounted side by side.

Key Facts About Air Curtain Sizing

  • The air curtain length must equal or exceed the door width — a unit shorter than the opening leaves an unsealed gap on one side.
  • Discharge velocity must be high enough that roughly 2 to 3.5 m/s of air still reaches the floor; taller doors need stronger units.
  • For doors above about 3.5 m high, an industrial down-blast or recirculating air curtain is recommended over a standard commercial unit.
  • Cold storage and freezer doorways need the highest velocity class to stop heavy cold air from spilling out and forming frost.
  • For fly and insect control in food and pharma units, a continuous high-turbulence jet across the full opening is what keeps insects out, not just airflow volume.

What is the difference between a commercial and an industrial air curtain?

Commercial units suit entrances up to about 3 to 3.5 m high for comfort and energy saving. Industrial units deliver higher velocity and airflow for tall factory gates, dock doors and cold rooms where a stronger air barrier is required.

Can one air curtain cover a wide gate?

Standard units come in 0.9, 1.2, 1.5 and 2.0 m lengths. For wider openings, multiple units are mounted side by side with no gap between them, and the calculator computes how many you need.
