Air Curtain Energy Savings Calculator — how much AC cost an open door wastes
Enter your door width, open hours and tariff to estimate yearly savings and payback. Assumptions are listed below the calculator.
Assumptions used
- Infiltration load through an open door ≈ 0.4 TR per foot of door width (3 ft door ≈ 1.2 TR) in typical Indian summer conditions.
- 1 TR of cooling ≈ 1.2 kW of AC electrical input (3-star split/cassette average).
- An air curtain sized to the door blocks 75% of infiltration (adjustable 50–90%).
- Air curtain draws ≈ 0.1 kW per foot while running (≈ 300 W for 3 ft) and runs only when the door is open.
- Estimates only — traffic, outdoor temperature, ceiling height and wind change the result. Ask for a site-specific estimate on WhatsApp.
Pick the right unit
Size the air curtain to the door: 2 ft · 3 ft · 1 m · 4 ft · 5 ft · 6 ft · 7 ft. Add a door sensor so it runs only when the door opens. For sizing by CFM and velocity use the air curtain sizing calculator.

How much electricity does an open door waste?
When a conditioned space has an open door, warm outside air flows in and cooled air flows out continuously. For a standard 3 ft shop door in Indian summer conditions this infiltration load is commonly estimated at roughly 1 to 1.5 tons of refrigeration while the door is open — close to a full extra AC running.
How much of that does an air curtain stop?
Field and manufacturer tests typically show an air curtain blocks 70–80% of the infiltration through an open door when it is sized to the door and mounted correctly. The calculator uses 75% by default and lets you change it.
Is this calculator exact?
No — it is an estimate from typical assumptions. Actual savings depend on door traffic, outside temperature, ceiling height, wind and how long the door stays open. Use it to see the order of magnitude, then ask us for a site-specific estimate.
